Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Non DEAD, legit music DL question...

As many of you by now recognize, I am as "web incompetent" as they come, Luddite by technological limitations of my own making, and also on a CREAM tangent of late. But, my question isn't really about CREAM, but the "legit DL world" of today.

The site I link below is one that I happened across while reading up on my current obsession. If you have a quick glance at it, you will find that you can DL various MP3 versions of ALL the commercially released material of CREAM.

My question is this: it appears that most all songs go for about fifteen cents per song...?! IE, you could have an entire album for a buck or two.

Is this the norm? Certainly this would not be the case at the DEAD store, right? As we've discussed many times, the pricing there for DL only versions is roughly ten times that amt. But, I recall others posting here that you can legitimately get songs for itunes for as little as a quarter, so perhaps the CREAM site below is NOT that unusual?

Or does it mean CREAM is as low rate as JOTS has always maintained? Just wondering if others could clarify whether or not this really is the Brave New World a number of us were discussing a few weeks past: artists are finding their songs on sale for mere PEANUTS these days?

Thanks for your indulgence; as always, I really am this slow on the uptake...

thx Rich; yep, actually, I already have it all, I was just wondering about the nature of the "legit" DL biz, and it seems Chris has exposed that there are "trading sites/DL sites", and then some not so legit "sales" sites, and, I wonder then, presumably a "legit" site somewhere that sells them for more (like itunes store I suppose).

that's not true Tell. I have a ton of respect for Cream. I just don't like the sound, don't enjoy listening to them that much. First off I don't usually like the sound of trios with rare exception ( like piano jazz trios, and I like Big Head Todd live ), and I'm not a huge fan of electric blues ( like acoustic blues better ). Just my preference. I don't listen to classical music either but that doesn't mean I don't respect it immensely

My bad J--I thought you'd (and everyone here too!) know that my comment came with a big fat JK (!)...it really did turn out to be sorta funny: everyone but me figures out in no time it's some russkie ripoff site (I only knew that $0.15 was too good to be true, so that's why I asked...).

But, now I am deeply hurt and offended that you don't know me nearly as well as I'd hoped. So there.

JK, again...but, on a serious note, I know you've mentioned liking EC later in his career, right? You might want to rent some of the CREAM flicks like Live Fresh Cream or Disraeli Gears since they offer lots of history on him that I think any fan of his would find interesting (depending on whether or not you like those interview style musical docu flicks; of course, I love them, CREAM or not). And, you might even find out some things about JBruce that will impress even you!

I've read about your Cream fasination and it has made me revisit them in recent weeks. My wife and had one of our first dates at a cream show and though I've always loved them, it has been fun revisiting an old friend.

Anyway...Not sure if you are familiar with a band called BBM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBM

Bruce, Baker and Gary Moore. We are big fans of Moore and I picked this up a few years back in the discount rack and forgot about it until recently. It is one you should check out.

Enjoy

thx, CC; yep, the band has come up in recent readings and the like...will look into them. Too bad Baker and Bruce couldn't/can't get along better...

Guess it depends on what you mean by legit :)

This is a Russian site, so they will claim they obtained the rights to sell the music through some made up Russian music industry (their version of the RIAA). The songs are so cheap because they aren't paying anyone.

So I doubt the RIAA would come knocking on your door for downloading from this site, but the artist won't make any money.

Amazon has loads of albums for $5. You may have some luck with emusic, but the songs are about 50 cents a pop instead of 15.

It sounds like the latest incarnation of Allok MP3 which was the old Russian cheap downloads site. They eventually got busted...

thanks so much Chris; this was EXACTLY what I was wanting to hear (ie, that knowing as little as I do, that I was wrong to assume that simply by "charging, looking 'legit' that they were").

Clears things up a bit.

Got to say that 15 cents a track WOW THAT'S A LOW PRICE !

LOL , I hate that commercial (Staples commercial) I've been wrong on many occasions and this is probably one of those times, but I dont see EC and company getting a penny (there wouldn't be much more of that out of $0.15) of that money. I (myself) can be certain that money is used for their expenses alone.

If people have ethical problems with file sharing, I can dig that. I don't have any such moral dilemma. I could state many reasons why I think it's actually benifical to the artist to allow sharing. I Won't do it here (WT sighs w/ releif).

Demonoid is my choice also, their music selection is the most eclectic, and never had any problems with them as long as the share ratio stays over 50% (end of plug)

I read this article today about Sir Mick and the boys and since it's sort of topical here I'll post

I guess let your conscience be your guide, or contact the site for their assurances
